FAQ’s – All of your lighting questions answered.

How long can LED lights last?

Many LEDs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL. Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years.

What are LED lights?

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a p–n junction diode, which emits light when activated. When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons.

Do LED bulbs get hot?

You probably know that LED bulbs run dramatically cooler than their incandescent cousins, but that doesn’t mean they don’t produce heat. LED bulbs do get hot, but the heat is pulled away by a heat sink in the base of the bulb.

Can you use an LED bulb in a halogen fixture?

Yes, there are LED bulbs you can use in your fixtures. The LED equivalent to the 50-watt halogen bulb will probably burn only about six or seven watts. TheseLED bulbs cost more, $30 to $35, but because they will last for years, they are worth the price. And LEDs give off relatively no heat at all.

Is led cheaper than CFL?

LED costs more at purchase, but lasts longer. CFLs are cheaper, but if broken become not so convenient very fast. Other people decide that CFL lighting is closer to what they’re used to and therefore choose these bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs as they blow out.

How efficient are LED light bulbs?

Compare LEDs to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) with 55-70 lumens per watt, and traditional incandescent bulbs with 13-18 lumens per watt, and the LED advantage is bright as day. LED manufacturers are not only increasing efficiency, they’re expanding options.
